Lifting lug (padeye) plate check calculator
A plate padeye with a pin hole: bearing on the plate, net-section tension across the hole, shear tear-out to the top edge, and the fillet weld to the base. Loads from the sling force at an angle with the dynamic factor. Elevation drawn to scale.
Standard: AS 4100 Cl 9 (pin & ply), AS 4991 lifting devices · DNV-ST-0378 padeye practice

Worked example — results
| Result | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Design force P | 240 | kN |
| Bearing capacity (pin on plate) | 581 | kN |
| Net section tension capacity | 1,275 | kN |
| Shear tear-out capacity | 653 | kN |
| Weld design capacity per mm | 1.66 | kN/mm |
| Weld force per mm (resultant) | 1.45 | kN/mm |
- ✓ P ≤ bearing
- ✓ P ≤ net section
- ✓ P ≤ tear-out
- ✓ Weld ≤ capacity — 87 %
- ✓ Pin clearance ≤ 6 % of hole — 4.4 %
Method, formulas and assumptions
- Bearing 3.2·dp·t·fy/1.6 (AS 4100 pin-ply style, reduced for pin clearance), net section 0.85·(b − dh)·t·fu, tear-out on two planes 0.6·fu·2(R − dh/2)·t, φ as noted. Weld: two fillets of length b resisting shear V and moment H·h.
- Proof-test and inspect lifting lugs; this is a preliminary check.
